Patricia expected to be Lions coach

Patricia is likely to become the next head coach of the Lions, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

At this point, it's nearly a guarantee that Matt Patricia will be the next head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Sources say that the Lions still need to work out the contract details after the Patriots' season ends. According to the NFL Network, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has asked his potential assistant coaches to wait for him, as it's believed he'll take the head-coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts. He can not officially accept the job until at least next week as the Patriots will face either the Jaguars or the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. As time went on, I think Matt was given a lot more responsibility.

If Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn can fix the run game and add a few playmakers on defense, the Lions will be firmly in the NFC North race next year. So if one team is willing to bend the rules and commit to a coach while another refuses to, it only makes sense that coach goes with what's guaranteed.

NY is home - he grew up four hours north of the city - and the Giants' organization is one of the most storied in the NFL.

Patriots fans will be happy to learn their defensive coordinator is so focused on the task at hand, especially after the Jaguars' offense put up 38 points in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday.

Speaking on a conference call Monday morning, Patricia didn't confirm the rumors, but he didn't deny them, either. He spent one year there before taking two years off before moving on to Amherst college in 1999 as the defensive line coach.

He's denied that publicly, but if the Giants miss out on all three of their current top targets, it would mean that both of Belichick's top lieutenants in New England had been hired elsewhere. That connection has been in place for a couple of years. Ballard and Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio have a solid working relationship, and that contributed to the teams making two trades earlier this year (TE Dwayne Allen to the Patriots, and QB Jacoby Brissett for WR Phillip Dorsett).

If the Detroit Lions are waiting out Matt Patricia, and every indication is that's exactly what they're doing, then they are going to have to sit tight for at least another week.
