Pat Shurmur needs to know what makes Odell Beckham tick

Giants GM calls new coach Pat Shurmur 'an adult'

"Shurmur inherits a team that went 11-5 in McAdoo's first season and bottomed out so badly that the Giants fired their head coach with four games remaining in 2017".

Pat Shurmur on his offensive philosophy, scheme and style.

Like everyone else in the packed room, the former offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings laughed, and then handled the situation without missing a beat. I'm just going to say that right away.

"Hopefully it's a new beginning for us and gets us back to a place we want to be", Mara said.

"There are reasons why the Giants slipped to 3-13", Shurmur said. He replaced Ben McAdoo, who was sacked last month before the end of a disastrous 3-13 campaign.

He explained that OBJ will be given a "clean slate". "There are changes that need to be made".

It's believed that Shurmur will support Gettleman's suggestion from his introductory news conference that the Giants want Manning here, at least for the immediate future. "Why did you do that?'" Shurmur said. "You have to run the ball, you have to stop the run, and you have to rush the passer". He is under contract with the Giants through the 2019 season. Three players were suspended for a week for conduct detrimental to the organization.

Shurmur did not dance around issues involving two marquee players he inherits, stating he believes Eli Manning remains a viable, winning starting quarterback and Odell Beckham is a supreme talent and it will be important to forge a relationship with the star receiver.

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post passed along comments from Gettleman, who noted Manning's strong performance against the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15 "was not a mirage".

Speaking generally about his coaching philosophy, Shurmur said he'll have "zero tolerance" for players who don't compete or show respect for the team.

Shurmur is expected to hit the ground running by assembling his coaching staff. Former Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher will be his defensive coordinator.

Assuming he's healthy, Shurmur said that it "makes sense" to throw him the football a lot and he'd be the "wrong guy" for the job if he felt otherwise. It had been five days since he was hired but the Friday introduction was truly the first time Shurmur got a glimpse of what his new professional life will be like. "How fast that happens?" I'm looking forward to working with him. "We're going to get some new ones and we're going to try to put together a team that can go out next year and win games".

Shurmur was the clear choice, the co-owners said.

"You need someone who is a quote adult unquote", Mara said. "I think he had all the qualities". He was impressed with the way the new coach walked through the building Thursday and introduced himself to everyone. Certainly they'll have the height, weight and speed that we're looking for by position, but we need to find guys that love to play the game. "It's a new day and it's very exciting". Tisch added he felt an nearly instant chemistry talking with him.
