Meryl Streep joins the cast of Big Little Lies

"Big Little Lies", which debuted on HBO in February 2017, won eight Emmys previous year and recently added four Golden Globes to its impressive awards haul.

Meryl Streep has been cast in the Emmy-winning HBO series, the network said Wednesday, joining Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon as television continues to attract major stars.

Laura Dern has called it an "acting dream come true", while Reese Witherspoon wrote on Instagram to say she was "beyond thrilled to have the one, the only Meryl Streep joining the cast". But with news of Streep's casting and Andrea Arnold having been chosen to direct all seven new episodes, the tides are turning in the show's favour. Streep is set to play the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's character - AKA Kidman's mother-in-law - in season 2.

First off, we love the idea of a Mamma Mia-verse.

Meryl Streep is headed to HBO will a role in "Big Little Lies". According to variety.com, Nicole Kidman and Witherspoon will again executive produce in addition to starring. "Monterey better watch out!" she captioned a photo of herself and Streep smiling for the camera.

The news of a second season was a big deal for fans, who were excited that the show would expand on the original story from the novel by writer Liane Moriarty. Earlier, she has won 3 Oscars for "The Iron Lady", "Sophie's Choice", and "Kramer vs. Kramer" respectively.

Streep has been hailed this year for her role in Steven Spielberg's Pentagon Papers drama The Post, for which she has earned her 21st Oscar nomination. However, it would seem that HBO has been so impressed by its success that it has made a decision to turn the series into an ongoing series and continue the stories of the Monterey women further beyond the source material.
