Mercedes India sales climb 16%

Mercedes India sales climb 16%

Mercedes-Benz launched around 12 new models in 2017.

The effect was not as pronounced for other luxury carmakers such as BMW India Pvt.

With regard to segment wise growth, the luxury sedan section grew by double-digit growth and the introduction of the Long Wheelbase E-Class significantly contributed to the volumes.

Market leader Mercedes-Benz is headed to retain the top spot in the luxury segment as it has built an unassailable lead with a 20 per cent jump in sales to reach the 11,869 units mark during the first nine months of 2017, which was 90 per cent of its 2016 volume. Interestingly, the German carmaker has recorded its best-ever growth even as Mercedes-Benz India head Roland Folger has been criticizing the government's policies for inhibiting growth.

In 2018, Mercedes-Benz will introduce products, many without a predecessor in India. We are in particular very satisfied with the strong growth in volumes in the C-Class, E-Class and the SUV segment which remains the mainstay of our portfolio.

The second largest luxury auto player, BMW India sold 9,379 cars during the full year in 2017, posting a healthy growth of 25 per cent as compared to 2016.

"Audi completed ten years in India in 2017".

Audi India stood at the third position with annual deliveries in the market for 2017 stood at 7,876 units. Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover's sales in India stood at 3,954 units as against 2,653 units in 2016, an increase of 49 percent. Benchmarking experiential events with new innovations like Brand Tour, LuxeDrive and AMG Performance Tours will remain the highlight of 2018, the company added.

The Stuttgart-based group reported sales of about 2.3-million cars in 2017, an increase of nearly 10% on the figure for 2016 and its seventh record year in a row.

In the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region, which includes the US, Canada and Mexico, Mercedes sold 400,320 cars, a 1.3% improvement over 2016's results.

"The decision to introduce long wheelbase E-Class was strategic and highly successful". The SUV segment also grew in double digits in 2017.
