Mahasweta Devi's 92nd birthday celebrated with a Google Doodle

Who is Mahasweta Devi? today's Google Doodle

Writing came naturally to her. Her father's brother Ritwik Ghatak was considered one of the finest directors in Bengal and her husband Bijon Bhattacharya was a prominent left-wing playwright and actor.

Born in 1926, in Decca, British India (Now Dhaka, Bangladesh), the author completed her graduation in Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English from the Rabindranath Tagore-founded Patha-Bhavana Vishvabharati University in Santiniketan. "Her early proximity to the People's Theatre Movement and the Communist Party confirmed her in her unconventional lifestyle and when in the 1950s she travelled widely in Madhya Pradesh by herself, trying to retrace historical memories in order to write- a biography of the Rani of Jhansi, her training as an activist journalist had begun", wrote Malini Bhattacharya. Her most popular works include Hajar Churashir Maa, Rudali and Aranyer Adhikar, the former two of which have been adapted into motion pictures.

Several of her novels have been turned into films in the recent past.

"The reason and inspiration for my writing are those people who are exploited and used, and yet do not accept defeat", she once said. First it was primarily for the money, then to document change and later, to share what she has seen. "I write for the masses". This artwork of Google pays tribute to the pre-eminent writer on her 92nd birthday.

She also published a journal, Bortika, giving voices to those who were unheard. Devi won the Sahitya Akademi award (1979), the Padma Shree (1986), the Jnanpith (1997), the Magsaysay award (1997) and the Deshikottam award in 1999. Her work has been translated into multiple languages.
