Natalie Portman announced the nominees for best director at the Golden Globes, calling out the lack of female nominees during the live telecast.
Since 1948, all but seven of the eventual winners of the accolade have gone on to repeat their success at the Oscars, with Damien Chazelle claiming the Best Director Academy Award past year (17) after taking home the DGA gong.
Comedian-writer Jordan Peele is up for two awards including Best Director for his directorial debut, Get Out. And Nolan is beloved by the DGA and deservedly gets recognition for his stunning achievement on Dunkirk here. Film veteran, Guillermo del Toro, scored his very first DGA nomination for his work in the Shape of Water. Del Toro won the top directing prize at the Golden Globes, though Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won Best Motion Picture Drama.
Previous female filmmakers to make the cut for the DGA Feature Film category include Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, and Kathryn Bigelow, who has twice been nominated, and won for 2008's The Hurt Locker. The Guild announced its feature film nominees Thursday, including Gerwig for the coming-of age film "Lady Bird" and Peele for his horror sensation "Get Out", which also earned him a first-time director nod.
Although Oscar and DGA nominations rarely match up exactly, guild choices can be a formidable predictor of the Oscar victor.
"Lady Bird" director Greta Gerwig and actress Saoirse Ronan arrive for the 75th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles January 7, 2018.
The film is also nominated for several Critics' Choice Awards including Best Picture. Meanwhile, the American Film Institute named the film one of its top films of 2017.
Gerwig will find out if she receives the Best Director award when Judd Apatow hosts the Directors' Guild Awards on February 3.
