Japan's Abe seeks Baltic support against North Korea

Abe Latvian PM discuss North Korea

"During today's talks we discussed the constantly worsening security situation in Eastern Asia and we were unanimous with Premier Boyko Borisov about the importance of close cooperation on the North Korea issue", Abe said. His host Kučinskis said he shared the same view.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Japan's former consulate in Lithuania on Sunday to honor Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who defied orders and helped save an estimated 6,000 Jewish refugees during the Second World War. He has already visited Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria and travels to Romania on Tuesday.

"As the worldwide order founded on the rule of law is being challenged, our two nations need to closely work together to maintain and strengthen the system", Abe said in a statement after meeting Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Bulgarian counterpart, Boyko Borisov, agreed in Sofia on Sunday to cooperate for an early signing and entry into force of an economic partnership agreement reached by Japan and the European Union past year.

Sugihara, who was Japan's vice consul in Lithuania, issued transit visas, now known as "visas for life", to Jews who were fleeing Nazi Germany, going against the Japanese government's policy at the time.

"I am glad that economic partnership treaty negotiations between Japan and the European Union have been concluded", Abe said, referring to the free trade agreement that will open EU markets such as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania to Japanese companies and vice versa.

In the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, the Japanese head of government will meet both President Roumen Radev and Prime Minister Boiko Borissov.

Abe and Borisov shared the view that it is necessary to put greater pressure on North Korea to end the reclusive nation's missile and nuclear development.

Vucic described Abe's visit as a turning point in relations between Serbia and Japan.
