James Bettcher to meet with Giants about defensive coordinator job

Pat Shurmur coached both Vikings quarterback Case Keenum and Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. He will coach Giants quarterbacks soon enough

Bettcher, 39, had been the Cardinals' defensive coordinator since 2015 after serving as linebackers coach for two seasons.

Big Blue will hire James Bettcher as their new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network.

Instead, the Cardinals hired Wilks, who also had interviewed for the Giants' head coach job, but wasn't considered a finalist despite his ties to Dave Gettleman.

After the Minnesota Vikings were eliminated on Sunday, the Giants officially announced the hiring of Minnesota offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their new head coach. Arizona has finished in the top six in fewest yards allowed in each of Bettcher's three seasons. Also rumored for the job in East Rutherford is former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio.

Now Bettcher is in contention for open defensive coordinator positions for a pair of teams.

James Bettcher was hoping to become the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, but with Steve Wilks taking that role and bringing in some of his own coaches, Bettcher is looking for work elsewhere. Shurmur was on Spagnuolo's staff when he was the head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

The Cardinals ranked 19th with 22.6 points per game allowed this season.

Bettcher also interviewed with and received an offer from the Tennessee Titans, the source said.
