On Reddit, Twitter and Facebook users report that their devices are stuck with an error message "This version of WhatsApp has become obsolete, please go to the Play Store to download the latest version", despite the app is up-to-date. Apparently, a small outage or bug in the platform will affect many users. As of January 13, on opening WhatsApp, some users have been receiving a notification which says that their app has now gone "obsolete".
Some of the hapless users took to Twitter to vent their frustration. When they did go to the Google Play Store to update the software, it turned out that they were already on the newest version of WhatsApp. However, the Play Store does not show any option to update but just displays uninstall and open options. And, there is no respite on tapping this option, claim the users.
According to a report on Techook.com WhatsApp has acknowledged the problem faced by its users and said that the problem is being fixed. The problem seems to exist mostly for Xiaomismartphone users as those who are complaining appear to be using Xiaomi devices. Moreover, not all users who faced the issue are not the beta testers of WhatsApp. WhatsApp has issued a statement which read, "It was a problem with how our app is distributed, which is not under our control".
Furthermore, the update obsolete error screen suggests that the issue is in the beta version of the application.
Visit whatsapp.com/android to download the latest version of the app. But mere uninstalling and installing of the application may cause the loss of your previous data if you haven't set the data synchronization to daily. Alternatively, you can also download the APK of WhatsApp on your phone and install it.
Enable automatic date and time and automatic time zone, kill all apps and finally, relaunch WhatsApp.
