Intel reveals possible slowdowns from 'Meltdown' processor fix

8th Gen Intel Core S series Chip

Further, the security patches released in recent days have been blamed for performance problems, including slowdowns in many systems.

Neatly linking to where we left off with AMD, Nvidia has issued a security bulletin regarding its driver updates for CPU speculative side channel vulnerabilities.

AMD has confirmed that its processors are exposed to both variants of the Spectre security flaw, but reiterated that its CPUs are immune to the Meltdown flaw that largely affects only Intel microprocessors.

The reason why Spectre and Meltdown affect such large number of computers is because they are in the processors made by Intel, AMD and ARM that power nearly all computers and phones nowadays. It also insisted that it has yet to receive any information that the Spectre/Meltdown flaw has been used to obtain customer data, but it's probably for the best to install the fix when you get it anyway. "We also commit to adding incremental funding for academic and independent research into potential security threats".

A wide range of security advisers agree that now that the exploits have been made public, it is only a matter of time before cyber attackers try to make use of them, and for this reason, enterprises can not afford to waste any time applying security updates from suppliers as they become available.

Project Zero was one of three teams that independently discovered and reported the Meltdown exploit, and one of two teams that independently discovered and reported the Spectre exploit.

Intel's fix for Meltdown and Spectre had a bug of its own

Intel share price has been dropping all week, though this is unlikely to bother CEO Brian Krzanich after he conveniently offloaded before the news broke, as the company continues to struggle to deal with the vulnerabilities. We expect this issue to be corrected shortly and Microsoft should resume updates for these older processors by next week.

However, the Wall Street Journal reports that Intel is quietly advising some customers to hold off installing patches because some of the patches have bugs of their own.

"We have received reports from a few customers of higher system reboots after applying firmware updates", said Shenoy. 'Specifically, these systems are running Intel Broadwell and Haswell CPUs for both client and data centre.

Security researchers disclosed the flaws that affected almost every modern computing device containing chips from Intel, AMD and ARM Holdings, owned by Japan's SoftBank Group.

The tech titan has confirmed the Spectre/Meltdown vulnerability's existence late past year, admitting that its latest chips have security holes remote attackers could exploit.
