History should not be distorted, says Mamata Banerjee after receiving DLitt degree

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee

Calcutta University's plans to confer D.Lit. on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seems to have hit a roadblock as Vice-Chancellor of North Bengal University Ranju Gopal Mukhopadhyay has filed a PIL opposing Calcutta University's plans. There are attempts to distort history.

Speaking at the University of Calcutta after being decorated with a higher doctorate degree during its convocation ceremony, Banerjee said: "Intolerance is rising in the country".

The Calcutta University (CU) had chose to honour the chief minister with the prestigious degree in literature for her contribution in social welfare and literature at its highest decision making body meeting- syndicate, on October 26, 2017.

Banerjee had said attempts to distort history is nothing but a crime while addressing the 78th Indian History Congress in Kolkata on December 29 a year ago.

"India has diversity of origin and we should respect that", she added.

The chief minister said she did not want to come to take the degree seeing the controversy.

"Some people are maligning me over this degree".

Mamata said she will not accept this exclusion of citizenship in Assam, and vowed to shelter anyone driven away from here.

Calcutta University has planned to confer D.Litt. on Mamata Banerjee.

The state government challenged the litigation and described it as "politically motivated" and indulging in "character assassination".

Significantly the CU will confer the honour to the chief minister the next day at Nazrul Mancha in south Kolkata.

His counsel, Bikas Bhattacharya had yesterday submitted that the issues relating to the university and education itself were of public interest and as such the petition was justified to be a PIL.
