Game of Thrones is taking a year off, United States cable network HBO announced late on Thursday, confirming that one of television history's most popular shows would not wrap until 2019.
The Emmy-winning sensation won't be back for its final season until 2019. They will collaborate on the six-episode, eighth and last season, to air in 2019. The final season of "Game of Thrones" will feature veterans of the show behind the scenes.
And whilst viewers won't see her until the series returns in 2019, Emilia Clarke proved she's just as fierce off the screen as she turned heads with her stunning ensemble on Thursday.
The delay makes sense for non-creative reasons, as well.
This is disappointing news for fans of the hit show who were hoping for a 2018 release date.
HBO confirms 2019 release for 'Game of Thrones' season 8
When season seven ended late a year ago, an all-time high of 12.1 million viewers tuned in. The move also clears a path for the network's other lavishly produced and acclaimed genre hit, Westworld, which returns for its second season this year after taking its own lengthy break.
And even the stars of the show don't know how the final series will play out as producers have taken drastic measures to stop the ending being leaked.
Meanwhile, Season 7 of Game Of Thrones was the show's highest-rated yet. HBO is silent on that front.
GOT Season 7 was aired over the past summer. Initially, season seven was going to be the last season, but the producers chose to cut it into two seasons. While some episodes may be longer than usual, once again we're hearing not to expect feature-length episodes throughout the season.
The television series has already advanced beyond the events of George RR Martin's five published novels in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
