Four dead, dozens missing after Venezuelan migrant boat sinks

"They're hunting. The people are hungry!" says the narrator of the video, who filmed the incident from his auto. The Dutch island is a popular destination for Venezuelans looking to escape food shortages, economic disaster, and an oppressive political climate.

Around 30 people were on the boat when it sailed from La Vela de Coro in Venezuela's northwestern Falcon state, sources said.

The remains of what appeared to be a 25-foot motor boat were found smashed on rocks near the entrance of a lagoon in an area called Koraal Tabak.

"If you don't know it well, it's a very hard area to navigate", he said.

Regional Civil Protection director Jose Montano said the boat departed Venezuela for the Dutch Caribbean island on Tuesday.

Authorities discovered four bodies washed ashore on Curacao, and they say 28 people are missing. Authorities say most of the passengers likely reached the island.

Two women and two men were "found on the beach this morning" Reginald Huggins of the Curacao police told local media. He said they were in custody. "We also found a lot of wood that's from a boat", he said, adding that debris included gas cans and personal belongings.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro imposed an air and sea embargo on Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire last week.

Maduro said he took the measure to fight trafficking groups that have helped cause severe shortages by smuggling Venezuelan products and minerals out of the county.
