Flu-related deaths continue to climb in California. Here's the latest toll

Commissioner Raul Pino said "We want to encourage everyone in CT to get vaccinated, it's very important for immune disorders, preexisting conditions, and for people 65 years and older".

In December, the flu gave Californians a deadly pounding - the virus has killed 27 people under the age of 65 there.

"We've had positive flu swabs since September and they kind of wax and wane", said Jones.

"It's not too late to get your flu shot".

"Those in at-risk groups, may be more susceptible to serious illness and you should contact your GP earlier if you have a high temperature or shortness of breath for advice".

There were some concerns expressed this flu season with how the province would be offering the annual flu shot - but the numbers show an increase in uptake. "Most of these can be self-treated without the need for a visit to the doctor, and with no need for an antibiotic".

With a couple of months left in flu season, more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have been vaccinated than a year ago, says the province's health minister. State officials are not mandated to report flu deaths among those 65 and older.

"Even if you do get the flu after you've gotten that flu shot, the medicine in you is going to make sure your symptoms aren't as severe and that the time that you're sick isn't going to be as long as somebody that wasn't vaccinated", said Hokanson. The vaccination still offers protection against other strains of the virus, and the California Department of Public Health says 70% of the people who died from flu there so far were not vaccinated. Despite vaccination being a third as effective compared to prior years and it is taking two weeks before it is effective, the California Department of Public Health website states it is "not too late to get a vaccination". Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the inoculation is proving to be much more potent in this country, although at about 32 percent effectiveness, it is less efficacious than other years. Flu season lasts from October through March each year, and typically peaks around January or February.

Local health providers and Kandiyohi County Public Health are emphasizing preventive habits: frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, getting adequate rest, and staying home when ill.

"If you're a healthy, working adult with no chronic health problems, most of the time you can take something for the symptoms and do just fine", said Beach. "People hate to miss work".

Symptoms of flu tend to come on suddenly.

The total number of flu cases in the state at the end of past year was at 71,469.
