First look at 'Handmaid's Tale' Season 2 promises more haunting beauty

The Elisabeth Moss drama has become an awards season favorite and will return in April

Another image shows Offred with a defiant look on her face, covered in blood. "Lizzie is such an incredible partner on this with me". "She's even better in season 2, if you can believe it". "The biggest barrier of Season 2 was Season 1", Miller admits.

Details on the plot for the upcoming season are hard to predict, since we're in largely uncharted territory when it comes to Margaret Atwood's original source material. "Margaret and I had started to talk about the shape of Season 2 halfway through the first", acknowledges Miller. Sometimes while writing the scripts, I just really wanted to surprise her.

Miller says the season will also expand on the lives of refugees who escape Gilead (such as Samira Wiley's Moira) as well as the prisoners who have been sent to work at the polluted "Colonies" scattered throughout America.

Fresh off big wins at the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards, Hulu's dystopian drama is gearing up for its sophomore run, and these first-look photos give us a glimpse of what's next for Offred (Emmy victor Elisabeth Moss) and her fellow handmaids.

What was hinted at in Atwood's novel can now be fully realized in The Handmaid's Tale season 2.

The disturbing landscape forbids women from working or being out in public alone; refers to homosexuals as "gender traitors", and forces women to become breeding factories in a world where a government conspiracy led to a dwindling in fertility rates. It is disturbingly easy to see how we can get from our society to Gilead's society.
