Federer begins defence of Australian Open title with win; Djokovic advances

Wimbledon 2016 Roger Federer

'I'm hoping for it to go well again, ' he said after the win.

Defending champion Roger Federer outclassed former Briton Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-4 6-3 to reach the Australian Open second round in Melbourne.

"It's great to be here with two tennis legends, Roger Federer and John Macintosh".

Winning his first game through to round two of the Australian Open, Roger Federer was speaking with fellow tennis champion John Maconroe when out of nowhere, WILL FERRELL strutted onto the court! "A gazelle? Don't they get eaten at the end?"

The 24-year-old Muguruza won her first match at the Sydney International but then withdrew with a hip problem. "Are you a witch or vampire?" and "Have you ever tasted wombat meat?" are just a few of the questions Ferrell lobbed his way.

The actor signed off with his famous catchphrase from "Anchorman": "Stay classy", inserting Melbourne at the end instead of San Diego.

In the women's singles, Russian tennis star and five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova defeated Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-4 in the opening match of the tournament here.

Roger Federer has had his fair share of post-match interviews but this may have been his most memorable yet.

Ferrell: Not if they're fast enough.

"That is untrue", Federer laughed. "I didn't still reply to a lot of people".

"I didn't know that was going to happen".

The Swiss great thrilled the centre court night crowd with an exquisite curving forehand down the line and past Bedene for another service break early in the final set.

"There is no better place to start than here in Australia, I love coming here, I love playing here", Djokovic told the crowd.

"Obviously I wanted to start with the right intensity, which I have", he said.

"I would like to see more players just being really themselves in front of the press, being more relaxed about it, not worrying so much about making mistakes". I'm loving it and hopefully I can play for a little longer.
