European Union urges U.S. not to withdraw from Iran nuclear deal

Trump had waived the sanctions on Friday to give Washington and its European allies a chance to fix the "terrible flaws" of the deal.

Trump has always been critical about the pact inked between the six world powers, namely China, Russia, Britain, France, the United States and Germany, and Iran in 2015, in which the West promises to relieve sanctions on Tehran in exchange for a halt in Iran's efforts to develop a nuclear weapon.

Trump was reportedly encouraged to waive the sanctions by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and national security advisor H.R. McMaster, who warned the President that it would look like he was breaking the USA commitments of the deal.

"Despite my strong inclination, I have not yet withdrawn the United States from the Iran nuclear deal".

Russian Federation has warned the Trump administration that withdrawing from the multi-lateral Iran nuclear deal would be a grave error.

Part of the nuclear deal was that the USA would waive the sanctions, which are part of the relief Iran gets in exchange for destroying much of its nuclear equipment and allowing inspections. Iranian officials have said they are not interested in any renegotiation.

The Thursday meeting in Brussels is part of diplomacy on both sides of the Atlantic before deadlines related to the deal falling this month, including deciding whether to reimpose oil sanctions lifted under the deal.

"Our close surveillance the IAEA [nuclear authority] has confirmed in nine reports that Iran is fully complying with the commitments made under the agreement".

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said it was a "desperate attempt" to undermine a "solid" deal. Iranian officials have said they are not considering making the missile program negotiable.

Washington also announced sanctions against 14 entities and people, including the head of Iran's judiciary, Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani.

According to anonymous officials on a conference call with various reporters, Trump will not issue any more waivers after Friday unless specific fixes are made to the Iran deal. During Barack Obama's presidency, these penalties largely cut Iran out of the global financial system, until they were suspended under the nuclear deal.

"Trump has once again avoided the nuclear option on the nuclear deal". Some Iran hawks want to see both sets of restrictions return, but the six people with knowledge of Trump's plans say the president isn't planning to reinstate either at this point.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has announced that the country will commit to no obligations beyond those it has already agreed to under an worldwide nuclear deal.

Ryabkov said the US withdrawal from the deal would damage other worldwide agreements.

Trump, the same day he waived the nuclear sanctions, imposed new sanctions on Iran for its human rights abuses and its military adventurism. Those mainly targeted Iranian defense officials, as well as a China-based network the U.S. says is supporting Iran's missile program.
