After scoring 22 goals last season with the Blackhawks, Panik finally looked like a player that could be worth a decent contract in the National Hockey League.
The Arizona Coyotes have traded forward Anthony Duclair and defenceman Adam Clendening to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forwards Richard Panik, and Laurent Dauphin.
"Richard Panik is a big, skilled winger who is an excellent goal scorer", Coyotes general manager John Chayka said in a statement.
Still, when considering the fact that the difference between first place and last place is only 12 points in that division, it's clear that the Blackhawks needed to do something to try and flip the script in their favor at the mid-way point of the season. They put defenseman Cody Franson on waivers Monday and sent him to the minors and have shuffled around their roster in recent weeks.
"It's gone back for a few years now where the team wasn't particularly happy with the player and the player wasn't particularly happy with the team and we worked through some things, tried a lot of different approaches in a lot of different ways", Chayka added.
"It was well deserved in terms of what he does for the organization", Chayka said, "I'm proud going to represent us and do it well". His defensive game needs work, but look no further than Nick Schmaltz as a young, offensive-minded player who has become defensively responsible and has earned the trust of his head coach. "Some of them are readily apparent". It's hard to play if you don't have the quickness and speed.
"The way the game is today, I don't think you can look backward at what was with a contract", Bowman said. It was a long process. "That's a void we were looking to fill, and we felt that he'd be a good fit for us". "John was great to deal with and Anthony hopes the trade ends up working out for both sides". Duclair also scored 24 assists that season in 81 games, good for 44 points on the year. They began the day in the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference by virtue of an 8-2 victory over the Senators on Tuesday. By his count, they had just four previous year around this time. A lot of the guys we've brought in recently bring that element to their game and I think it really meshes with the style Joel [Quenneville] wants to play. "His shooting percentage from areas he's scored in the past is just slightly down this year". "We expect that to bounce back". Panik's contract for this year and next at a $2.8 million AAV was seen as a bit too much in cap-strapped Chicago, but is not a problem for the Coyotes. "It wasn't the motivation for the trade". "There were games that stood out, in Toronto and others, where he basically won us the game".
