Barty books all-Aussie semifinal against Gavrilova, clears Strycova in Sydney

Former world number one Angelique Kerber maintained her ideal record in 2018 as she saw off Camila Giorgi in straight sets to reach the Sydney International final.

Kerber, who began a year ago as No 1 before finishing at No.22, continued her 2018 resurgence with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Camila Giorgi, ending the Italian qualifier's run of six wins in the tournament.

Former world No.1 Angelique Kerber has continued her strong play to start the season, advancing to the Sydney International semifinals on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dominika Cibulkova.

"I played the last match of 2017 against her, so it was not so long ago".

"Being now in the semis again here, it's really a good feeling, especially that I had the goal, to have a lot of matches before going to Melbourne".

Gavrilova was playing her third successive Australian opponent in Sydney.

"I felt like it was a pretty good level", Barty said. "I was working hard in the last few weeks", Kerber said.

Ashleigh Barty eased through her quarterfinal clash against Barbora Strycova in straight sets, setting up an all-Australian battle against Daria Gavrilova. "I'm just motivated to do it".

"For us, it's flawless".

Second-seeded del Potro, champion in 2009, beat four-time champion and eight-time semifinalist David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 in just under two hours Friday while Bautista Agut, the 2016 champion, defeated Robin Haase 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) in a three-hour marathon.

De Minaur stunned fourth seed Milos Raonic in the second round on his way to reaching the Brisbane International semi-finals last week before losing to American Ryan Harrison.

Medvedev is eyeing off his first career title after toppling veteran Italian Paulo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-3.
