Anti-India protests marred with Vande Matram slogans in London

Members of the Indian diaspora on Friday protested against Pakistani-origin United Kingdom politician Lord Nazir Ahmed, who held an anti-India campaign on the occasion of the nation's 69th Republic Day on January 26, reported PTI.

One of the Indian activists was quoted saying, "I am here today to tell Lord Nazir that they are asking for independence for my state of J&K but I want freedom from Pakistan sponsored terrorism, ceasefire violations and their proxy war".

Ahmed and a collaborator, Raja Umer Farooq, dragged in some supporters from Nagaland, Punjab, Manipur and the Dalit community as they moved towards the India High Commission in London to call for self-determination in Kashmir. Protesters from both sides were shouting slogans and insults at each other. While Lord Nazir led hundreds of demonstrators calling for independence for Kashmir and Khalistan, an equal number of counter-protesters broke scuffles. "From now on, we have to be vocal".

On the day when India was celebrating its 69th Republic Day, a Pakistan backed "Black Day" campaign was organised outside the Indian High Commission in Central London.

The Labour Party appears to be not only anti-Israel (this week Labour advised their MPs to block a blanket ban on Hezbollah) and anti-US (Emily Thornberry, Shadow Defence Secretary called President Trump "an asteroid of awfulness"), but also anti-India. Earlier this year, the Birmingham Council withdrew permission for a rally due to take place on the death anniversary of Burhan Wani, after India raised its concerns about the event and the eulogisation of the Kashmir militant.

Lord Nazir Ahmed was born in 1957 in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). His parents moved to United Kingdom while he was 11. The member of the British House of Lords was suspended from the Labour Party in 2012 for his divisive comments.
