Unranked Washington Upsets No. 2 Kansas, 74-65

"When you run a 2-3 zone, you've got to leave somebody open".

Four days after the No. 2 Jayhawks shot over the top of such a defense to beat Syracuse, a former assistant for the Orange extended the alignment a bit Wednesday to help Washington stun previously unbeaten Kansas 74-65 in Sprint Center. It worked, as the Jayhawks hit just 5-of-20 three-point attempts while Washington connected on 9-of-21 from distance.

"It's just whatever the flow of the game is".

Senior guard Svi Mykhailiuk and junior guard Lagerald Vick are averaging 17.1 and 16.4 points, respectively. "Trust me, it's hard seeing a guy hit three or four in a row, but we just forced him to miss a couple, and we were able to score and keep our lead".

The Huskies, coming off a 9-22 season in which they lost the top pick in the National Basketball Association draft Markelle Fultz, stunned the Jayhawks with a combination of hot perimeter shooting and a stifling 2-3 zone that shut down Kansas' normally proficient shooting and passing lanes. Borislava Hristova led Washington State (5-5) with 13 points. The Huskies were never again threatened.

Jaylen Nowell also had 15 points, and Noah Dickerson added 13 points and 14 rebounds, as the Huskies (7-2) beat the Jayhawks (7-1) for the first time since December 1974. Its really the kryptonite of the zone, ” said Hopkins, who spent 22 years on Jim Boeheims staff at Syracuse, a tenure that came in handy considering the Jayhawks just beat the Orange. I do think we're better when we have balance. "We had a situation against Syracuse where one guy bailed us out". Forty-four of Kansas' 64 points came from inside the paint.

On Monday, Graham was named the national player of the week by NCAA.com and the Lute Olson Award and also received Big 12 player of the week distinction.

- Kansas is averaging 91.9 points per game, which is second in the Big 12 and sixth nationally. But when were not, we get average real quick.”.

"From the beginning of the season it was on us, we knew it was going to be on us to believe in us and we weren't going to have a lot of help on our side", Thybulle said.

If Washington can force early turnovers and disrupt the perimeter passing lanes for Kansas, it can give its offense a chance to take advantage.

In spite of a defensive effort that held Kansas to 45.2 percent shooting, well below the 53.5 percent clip the Jayhawks had coming in, Hopkins credited his offense. Kansas' 0.591 effective field goal percentage was their biggest strength over Syracuse, who had a rate of 0.375. He's a guy who can score or can make a pass to finish a play. The way I thought we'd attack it best was bad. Kansas is the only team in the nation with five scorers averaging 11.9 or more points. He didn't get into the game.

Graham reached his career-high 35 points with about eight minutes left in the Toledo victory and matched it with about five minutes remaining against Syracuse, making the performances even more impressive, Self said. The Huskies (6-2) will travel to Kansas City to face No. 2 Kansas Wednesday night before returning to Seattle to host No. 12 Gonzaga Sunday.
