Tennessee offers job to Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt

Reports: Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt offered Tennessee job

It was a search that Vol fans were very confident in before former head coach Butch Jones was even fired.

The Tennessee Volunteers are reportedly closing in on Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt to be the school's next head coach.

Southern Cal offensive coordinator and former Tennessee national championship quarterback Tee Martin will not be coming back to Knoxville if Jeremy Pruitt accepts the job offer. Under Pruitt Alabama gave up an average of 11.5 points a game this season and 11.8 points last season. Pruitt also was the defensive coordinator at Florida State on the Seminoles' 2013 national championship team, and he was the defensive coordinator at Georgia under Mark Richt for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, before returning to his alma mater. This year, Alabama leads the nation in scoring defense and yards per play. Pruitt doesn't fall in that category, but it's hard to imagine Vols fans being too upset at a hire with his background of winning whose departure could hypothetically weaken Alabama at the same time.

Pruitt's first coordinator job came at Florida State in 2013.

He named his son, born in May, after former Alabama linebackers Ryan Anderson and Reuben Foster. "There ain't no holding back".

Fulmer took over the head coach search on Friday, when he replaced John Currie as athletic director.

Tennessee AD Phillip Fulmer called Martin on Tuesday from NY, where he was attending Peyton Manning's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, but there was no face-to-face meeting or job interview.

Despite all of the problems behind the scenes, the end result is still pretty good for Tennessee.

The 43 year old is widely recognized as an excellent recruiter and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2016.
