Sheffield suspends Uber licence

Uber has had its licence suspended in Sheffield

The reason why Uber's license was suspended is because of a dispute surrounding the company failing to change the name on the license from that of the former United Kingdom boss Jo Bertram.

Uber bosses cite they needed to make a name change on the licence and Sheffield Council made them apply again.

"They will now go through the proper processes and must meet the stringent standards in Sheffield which can only be good news".

Brighton Council and Rotherham Council only granted six and 12 month contracts respectively.

Sheffield City Council has suspended Uber's licence to operate in the city from 18 December after the company failed to respond to requests for information about its management.

The Employment Appeal Tribunal ruled in November that Uber drivers were employees and not freelance contractors, and were therefore entitled to minimum wage and other benefits.

Uber will be allowed to operate until December 18th, and further will be allowed to continue if it appeals the suspension (which, let's face it, it will).

Uber said that it will appeal the suspension so it can "continue to serve people in Sheffield". Previously, the company had its license suspended in London, and current CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has said that Uber is working hard with Transport for London to find the best solution and move things along.

It is understood that Uber was already applying for a new licence instead under the name Uber Britannia Limited and that is being considered. It will only be referred to the licensing sub-committee if a decision by the committee is required.

Uber said it informed the council in October that it would need to change the name on its licence as the named individual would be leaving the company.

Uber said it submitted an application for a new licence on October 16 which continues to be processed by local officials. A series of admin errors followed, as it seeks approval for its new licence application.
