Serena Williams set for likely Australian Open comeback after pregnancy

Djokovic hasn't played since retiring from his quarter-final at Wimbledon against Tomas Berdych in July with an elbow injury

Serena Williams returns to tennis at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

Nearly four months after giving birth to a baby, Serena Williams will be returning to tennis in Abu Dhabi in the next week.

The 12-time Grand Slam victor has not played competitive tennis since retiring from his Wimbledon quarter-final against Tomas Berdych, having had problems with the injury for over 18 months.

Williams will play an exhibition match against defending French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi as she is set to make her first competitive appearance since she won her record 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open in January.

She gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, on Sept 1.

The American, who has never played the 20-year-old Ostapenko, will face the Latvian in the tournament's first ever women's match.

"I'm delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter in September", the 36-year-old said in a statement. "I've never had surgery in my life, I've never had any major injuries that kept me away from the tour for such a long time", Djokovic told Sport360 in Abu Dhabi. For the MWTC, which is on its 10 sup th edition, it will be the first time for women to compete in the event.

New mom Serena Williams is preparing to return to the courts. The event runs from December 28 to 30 and is regularly a men's pre-season competition, but could not apparently resist luring Williams after men's injury pullouts from Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, and Milos Raonic in quick order after all failed to recover fully from 2017 injuries.
