Russian Federation provides air cover for Kurdish militia in Syria

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan greets his supporters during a meeting of his ruling AK Party in Kars, Turkey, December 2, 2017. The Defense Ministry said among the delegation was the Russian General Yevgeny Poplavsky, one of the commanders of the Khmeimim Air Base, an airbase now operated by Russia in the Syrian city of Latakia.

The Russian military said Monday it has provided air cover to the PKK Syrian affiliate Democratic Union Party's (PYD) People's Protection Units (YPG) militia in eastern Syria.

"Russian aviation carried out 672 sorties and bombed over 1,450 targets in the interests of supporting the offensive by the militias of eastern Euphrates tribes and Kurdish militias", the ministry said in a statement.

Pahon said the USA -led coalition would continue to operate in Syria to completely defeat the terror group, stabilize liberated territory and allow for the return of displaced Syrians.

Russian Federation and the Syrian government are not serious about defeating the Islamic State terror group, inspite of a pledge to drive the militants out of territories east of the Euphrates River.

The SDF in turn accused Moscow of striking its forces several times during the drive, which made the announcement by both Moscow and the YPG all the more surprising.

Poplavsky, speaking at Sunday's meeting involving tribal leaders from eastern Deir ez-Zor province, also noted that Russian military advisers helped coordinate their fight against the Daesh in the east.

"Kurdish formations are ready to provide security for the Russian force grouping located on the eastern bank of the Euphrates", Co-Chairman of the Committee for Governance of the Eastern Territories of the Euphrates Mahmud Nuri said. On the western bank, the Syrian military has waged its own attack against Daesh with support from Iran-backed militias and Russian Federation.
