Raiders' pursuit of Jon Gruden could include ownership stake

ESPN broadcaster and former head coach Jon Gruden could be pursued by the Oakland Raiders to get back into coaching

According to ESPN, if the contract offer includes ownership stake, the deal would need to be approved by the other National Football League owners.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen are reporting Saturday night that the Raiders are set to make a significant offer to Gruden - one that could include partial ownership of the team.

The 54-year-old coached for four years in Oakland-compiling a 38-26 record-and he helped lead the Raiders to the AFC Championship Game in 2000.

The elephant in the room is that the Raiders now have a head coach in Jack Del Rio.

Gruden met with the Colts last season, and Oakland has "made other attempts in other years at bringing back Gruden", per Mortenson and Schefter. Said Gruden on the possibility of returning to coaching, "I've got a job I'm trying to hang onto".

Every offseason, there are always rumors that Gruden is going to return to coaching. The NFL's finance committee also would have to vet Gruden, and it would be that body, along with input from several owners, that would be responsible for raising an objection to an ownership clause.

Gruden told ESPN that there is no news to report but, "I can't say I haven't taken any phone calls".

He may not be able to control some of the reports (like this one), but it was Gruden who pulled the rip cord on the lawnmower by musing about coaching at a time when most assumed he'd migrated to the Bill Cowher don't-bother-to-even-ask phase of his career.

Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

He now serves as the color commentator during the Monday Night Football telecast, a job he has insisted he is happy in. The Raiders would also empower Gruden to "reshape the front office, coaching staff and entire organization". I take a lot every year from coaches, some others. He spent the next seven seasons with the Buccaneers, putting up a mediocre 57-55 mark but won a Super Bowl XXXVII against Oakland.
