Parliament winter session: Centre targets 25 bills over 22 days

PM urges NDA partners to push Govt agenda in Winter session

Opposition parties on Thursday strongly criticised the Election Commission over its "inaction" regarding alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat and said the "attitude" of the poll body has cast an "ominous shadow" on its "credibility".

The government pushed back the session from its usual schedule to ensure that it doesn't clash with the Gujarat poll campaign.

As an often acrimonious Gujarat Assembly election came to an end and with Parliament's Winter Session due to start on Friday, the Opposition parties led by the Congress met Thursday to chalk out their floor strategy. Also, the Congress does not intend to let the allegation leveled by PM Modi against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pass. "Never before has another PM spoken so loosely about a former PM", a senior Opposition leader, who attended the meet, told Mail Today. The Opposition leaders also voiced disappointment and "outrage" over the disqualification of Sharad Yadav and Anwar Ali from the Rajya Sabha. At the meeting Congress leaders raised the issue of Mr Modi's claim during a speech in Gujarat that Dr Singh had colluded with Pakistan to influence the state election, and said they would raise it in Parliament.

"Government did it deliberately because the Prime Minister and his entire cabinet was busy in Gujarat elections".

# We are always in favor of constructive suggestion, we are very much interested to run Parliament & issues to be discussed, provided the Govt should take interest and create such an atmosphere which is conducive for discussion.

"My appeal to the government is allow the opposition to express their point of views", he said.

Dr. Ranjana Kumari, the director of the Centre for Social Research, said: "The women of India are disgusted and appalled to see the government ignoring the Bill even after three-and-a-half years of being in power".

The government has listed nine new bills, including one to criminalise instant triple talaq, for the short session.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had asserted that the Congress party would raise various issues in the Parliament session including Goods and Services Tax (GST), demonetisation, Rafael deal and economic condition.
