Oregon Hall of Famer expresses disappointment in Willie Taggart's departure

The Florida State fight song accompanied Willie Taggart into his introductory press conference as the Seminoles' new head coach.

Before that he spent three seasons as head coach at his alma mater, Western Kentucky, inheriting a winless program that he turned around with back-to-back winning seasons.

You could tell what this job means to Taggart, too.

Taggart talked at length about his childhood growing up in Palmetto, Florida, where his whole family rooted for the Seminoles. Now he's fulfilling that lifelong dream. I don't want to leave, Dad, but if you are going to chase your dream, I am going to ride with you'. "We need to put a fence around the state of Florida and try to keep our best football players here", Taggart said.

Evidently that included Florida State president John Thrasher.

When Taggart was hired by OR, he said he had three basic tenets: "Make no excuses, blame no one, do something", tenants he reiterated during his introductory media conference.

"To tell you the truth, I had the feeling already, and then seeing all the publicity and stuff", James said. On Wednesday, KTVL sports anchor Brian Schnee spoke with former Oregon Ducks safety and a member of the school's Hall of Fame, Chad Cota, to discuss Taggart taking the Florida State job.

Just the third full-time head coach of the Seminoles since Bowden's first year in 1976, Taggart said he always grew up rooting for and wanting to play at FSU. Taggart's experience at USF should serve him well in the recruiting game because he focused on the Sunshine State during recruiting. It is exciting to know we have really good players here.

Taggart revealed the timetable that led the Wednesday's press conference.

"Really, really great people Eugene, and a really, really hard decision for me because the people were so great", he said. But he said there was nothing else but interest. I wanted to come up and play here, but I wasn't good enough. "The timing is probably not right, but it's never right when it's time to leave". "But no matter where I went, the Seminoles were still always a part of me". So, if he left after one season, he'd owe Florida State $25 million. Asked multiple times whether he would remain Oregon's coach next season, he repeatedly answered, "why wouldn't I be?"
