Oakland A's ballpark plan dealt big blow

Oakland Athletics President David Kaval

"It was never that this was a done deal and I think that I have been very clear that we had no commitment, no deal, no contract", said Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Jowel Laguerre.

After news broke last month that the Oakland A's had finally settled on a site for their new ballpark at Oakland's Peralta Community College District, their plans have been derailed after the school made a decision to cancel negotiations with the team. "The board provided direction to the chancellor to discontinue planning for a community engagement process on a possible baseball stadium", read the release.

We are shocked by Peralta's decision to not move forward.

The board held a closed session meeting to discuss the A's proposal to use the land for a new stadium.

"We are disappointed that we will not have that opportunity", the A's said.

The news appears to have come as a major surprise the A's.

A protest at the Peralta district offices shortly after the A's announced their intent to build there. As the only remaining professional sports team in Oakland, the pressure was on for the A's to choose a site in the city, but with their top pick off the table, the Athletics could be enticed to leave. Part of the problem was internal opposition, with students and administrators voting no on the idea.

However, groups representing faculty, staff and students at Laney College and other Peralta schools have opposed the stadium plans, saying it could displace long-time residents in the area, make it harder for students to live nearby, and create an increase in traffic and pollution.

Libby Schaaf, Oakland's mayor, remains optimistic about the A's future in the city and the team's ability to build a new ballpark.

"The Coliseum site already has a BART station with large capacity, and the pedestrian walkway could be improved, both to make it larger, and to make it more attractive and welcoming", Kaplan said.
