Riley will return as an assistant head coach under Jonathan Smith, the school announced Thursday, reuniting the longtime OSU head coach with Smith - the former quarterback he recruited as a walk-on in 1997.
Riley's role has yet to be determined, according to the Oregon State news release. Riley coached Oregon State from 1997-98 before taking the San Diego Chargers coaching job, only to return from 2003-14. After leaving Oregon State, Riley was then called on to be the Nebraska head coach in 2014, and was sacked after this this past regular season.
When Smith was officially introduced as OSU's next head football coach November 30, he noted that his former coaches at OSU - Riley and Dennis Erickson - could have a role on his staff. Bray was Nebraska's linebackers coach and he served as the interim head coach for a week before the Huskers hired Scott Frost. "There is no one better to have represent OSU in the homes of recruits as we build this program". Now he's going back to Corvallis, Ore., this time as an assistant.
Riley was 19-19 at Nebraska and the Cornhuskers were 4-8 this season, the school's worst record since 1961. He was sacked following the season and replaced by Scott Frost.
