Michael Flynn Vowed to End Russia Sanctions, According to Whistleblower

As President Trump delivered his inaugural address, national security adviser Michael Flynn texted a former business partner that a private nuclear power project that would require lifting sanctions on Russian Federation was "good to go", a senior House Democrat said in a letter released Wednesday.

That's the account a whistleblower told Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which has been investigating Flynn's role in the project.

Flynn also informed the associate that his business partners could move forward with their project, which aimed to construct a network of nuclear reactors across the Mideast with support from Russian and other global interests, the whistleblower said.

Cummings detailed the whistleblower's allegations in a letter to committee chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., and urged Gowdy to authorize subpoenas to Flynn and his business associates to learn more about his efforts.

The whistle-blower told Mr Cummings that he saw a text from Flynn that was sent on Jan 20 "approximately ten minutes" into Mr Trump's speech when Flynn was sitting in the audience.

The whistle-blower told Mr Cummings that he was attending an inaugural event on Jan 20, where he met one of Flynn's key allies on this project, Mr Alex Copson, who is described as a managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners, and was working with Flynn to promote the joint project with Russian Federation to build nuclear reactors in the Arab world. The letter asks that the committee issue subpoenas for Flynn-related documents the committee requested on a bipartisan basis in March. Copson added that "this is going to make a lot of very wealthy people".

An attorney for Flynn did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC. According to this whistleblower, General Flynn reportedly sent a key communication on Inauguration Day indicating that the project was now "good to go" and directing his business colleagues to move forward. "I am going to celebrate today".

The Wall Street Journal reported in September that while in the White House Flynn promoted a project that would involve building dozens of nuclear plants around the Middle East.

That's the explosive, but unverified, allegation of a whistleblower cooperating with House Democrats probing the myriad scandals surrounding Flynn, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with a senior Russian diplomat. But it's not. Cummings provided hard evidence that he wants to form the basis of a subpoena created to uproot what really happened.

Flynn had assured his former associate that USA sanctions against Russian Federation would immediately be "ripped up" by the Trump administration, a move that would help facilitate the deal, the associate told the witness.

Mr. Gowdy and Mr. Cummings have a long history of clashing publicly over politically charged investigations.

"Mr. Copson explained that Gen. Flynn was making sure the sanctions would be ripped up as one of his first orders of business and this would allow money to start flowing into the project", Cummings said, quoting the witness.
