Kentucky flights impacted by outage at world's busiest airport

One of the heaviest travel weeks of the year began with the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights on Sunday at the world's busiest airport in Atlanta, where a power outage that lasted almost 11 hours left passengers stranded in darkened terminals or in aircraft idling on tarmacs.

Georgia Power said it believes a failure of its equipment may have started the fire and in a written statement, the firm said: 'While evaluation of the incident is ongoing, Georgia Power believes that a piece of Georgia Power switchgear located in an underground electrical facility could have failed and started a fire.

It's unclear how widespread the outage is or what is its cause.

At about 1:06 p.m., a power outage occurred.

The Atlanta airport tweeted around 1:15 a.m. photos of Chick-fil-A workers handing out sandwiches and water.

The FAA ordered a ground stop on all flights headed to the airport due to the power outage.global flights into Atlanta are being diverted to other airports. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but nothing suggests it was set deliberately, he said.

Hundreds of flights are now cancelled and the backlog could mean travel chaos lasting up to a week as airlines claw back their postponed flights.

Inside the airport, the outage cut power in the terminals, leaving passengers stranded in the dark as they stood in line at gates and security checkpoints.

"We're just focusing on the comfort of our passengers", Reed told a news conference on Sunday.

"We've had flights delayed, but nothing having to stay nights anywhere or to get home a day late", said Daniel Jones who was in town with the Junior Hurricanes of Raleigh, N.C. "I made a decision to get the hell out of there".

That includes a flight to the Eastern Iowa Airport scheduled to arrive at 4:38 p.m. Sunday and a flight to Atlanta scheduled to depart at 5:13 p.m. Stores stopped serving food and passengers were evacuated to alleviate crowding.

Travelers stranded at the Georgia International Convention Center were also treated with the meals.

All passengers had safely disembarked from aircraft by approximately 10 p.m., or nine hours after the outage began, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said on Twitter (twtr).

But no matter how fast Delta and other airlines move, it will take a few days to get the thousands of grounded passengers to their final destinations, said Robert Mann, president of an airline consulting firm in Port Washington, New York.

All incoming and outgoing flights at the airport have been halted since early Sunday afternoon. Seven hours later, she was still on the plane. "I'm amazed I've been able to sit here and not lose my mind".

CNN's Betsy Klein spent almost seven hours in a plane on the tarmac, waiting to move.

Delta leaders have been working to support customers by coordinating with Atlanta airport officials and leaders at the City of Atlanta and Georgia Power. Airport personnel, Atlanta Fire and Rescue officials and Georgia Power staff are on the scene to respond and restore service, a spokesman said. American, United, and JetBlue have also canceled all inbound and outbound Atlanta flights, WSB-TV reported.

Delta, which has its headquarters and largest hub in Atlanta, canceled more than 900 Delta mainline and regional flights as a result of the ground stop.
