John Conyers III Was Once Arrested On Suspicion Of Domestic Abuse

NBC News reported that John Conyers III was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in February in Los Angeles. Yesterday as his father resigned from Congress Rep. John Conyers endorsed his eldest son to take his seat

The younger Conyers was arrested in February after his girlfriend called the police and said he "body slammed her on the bed and then on the floor where he pinned her down and spit on her", NBC News reported, citing a police report.

Conyers III is credited with writing a handful of articles for the Huffington Post with a bio that says he spends time between Detroit and Los Angeles.

The girlfriend said that Conyers III suspected her of cheating after he went through her computer. The girlfriend had a small stab wound on her lower bicep but prosecutors said there was no way to prove that the victim's injury "was not accidentally sustained". He also rapped about other family incidents including the three year jail sentence for his mother, former Detroit councilwoman Monica Conyers, for taking bribes, The Daily Caller reported.

Local 4 reached out to John Conyers III through the family attorney and tried to reach him on the phone, but we have not heard back.

The domestic incident took place on February 15 in Los Angeles when the unnamed girlfriend said Conyers III attacked her, then tried to prevent her from calling the police, according to documents obtained by NBC News. The victim was not named in the document that recorded the decision not to file charges. By her account, she grabbed a knife out of self-defense and told Conyers III to leave, but he took the knife, cutting her arm in the process.

Both of them called 911 to complain about the other.

Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat who represented Detroit for more than 50 years, resigned Tuesday amid accusations of sexual misconduct.

The congressman's son was taken into custody and then released instead of having to pay the $50,000 bail.

"John Conyers III, who of course, I endorse to replace me in Congress", John Conyers said.

Another family member, MI state Sen. Ian Conyers, whose grandfather is Rep. Conyers' brother, has already announced his plans to run for the seat. The agency didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

News broke the story Wednesday, reporting that while Conyers III was arrested, he was not prosecuted.

It seems Rep. John Conyers' son and appointed successor may face some challenges convincing voters he's the right man for the job.

John Conyers III has lived at his parents' house in Detroit over the years and has also lived in Los Angeles.
