Honda Insight Prototype is 99 percent the all-new 2019 Insight hybrid

For its third generation, the Insight will not be sold in the United Kingdom, but the IMA - Integrated Motor Assist - system will find its way into later United Kingdom cars such as the CR-V due in 2018, as well as future hybrids, as Honda continues its push for electrification. "You won't have to be an electrification advocate to appreciate the new Insight - it's a great vehicle in its own right, independent of what's happening under the hood".

Ah, the Insight. The model best remembered as the teardrop-shaped two-seater that gave North America its first taste of hybrid motoring in December 1999 was soon eclipsed in sales by the Toyota Prius.

The original Insight of the early 2000s was a 3-door hatch.

The second-generation Insight made its debut in 2009 as the most affordable hybrid on the market.

A single image accompanies Honda's announcement, but it shows that the vehicle will take a more conventional saloon shape than its more Prius-like high-reared predecessor. The Insight morphed into a Prius-like 5-door hatch for its second generation, though the auto didn't prove popular and was dropped in 2014. Up front, the Insight takes its styling cues from the new 2018 Honda Accord, and its rear end is far cleaner than what you'd find on the Civic. For starters, the 2019 Insight will use Honda's two-motor hybrid system (instead of the old IMA hybrid system) for improved performance. In 2016, more than 95% of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the USA were made in North America, using domestic and globally sourced parts.
