Google Tez gains 12 million users in India, introduces bill payments feature

Google Tez gets 12 million users in 4 months since launch, introduces bill payments feature

Google reports that Tez has processed over 140 million transactions from almost 12 million active users.

Google's beside itself with joy at having triumphed with Tez, its app for peer-to-peer payments in India.

Google says on an average, Indians consumer 4GB of data every month and expects that data consumption could increase up to 11 GB per month over the next four years.

Tech giant Google said on Tuesday that its payments app Tez has acquired 12 million active users in just 10 weeks since its launch in India and that it will start offering bill payments.

In addition, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data suggests that Tez accounted for 70% of all UPI transactions between October and November. Starting today, Google is rolling out a bill payments feature that will let Tez users fetch and pay for household and utility bills from major suppliers like Airtel, DishTV, Tata Power, ACT Fibernet, DoCoMo. Back at the end of October, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) had gained over 7.5 million users.

Tez is far from the finished article for Google, however, and the next big step was revealed by Sengupta at the Google For India showcase. The goal of Tez is to allow users to send money to friends and make payments to merchants, and it appears to have taken off quite well as Google recently announced that the service is about to cross 12 million users.

At its launch, the bill payment facility will support over 70 billers, including national and state electricity providers, gas and water, and DTH recharge, Google said.

Revealing the other favourable numbers, it said that 28 per cent of total search queries in India are done through voice commands. Like most Google products, Tez also has a fun Easter egg or two hiding up its sleeves. For low-budget phones, it has announced a new search app called Google Go. The most important is Android Go, a lightweight edition ...

The firm is also expanding its Internet Saathi programme in India which has been aimed to empower women in the country.
