Google shuts Chrome apps for Mac and Windows

Google is killing Chrome Apps for desktops for good

This extension enables you to install, view, and modify the Chrome Remote Desktop native client from the web UI. We've also long since known that Google would drop Chrome web apps from Linux, Mac and Windows. People who use Chrome just for web surfing will be able to download extensions and themes.

Google, in a blog post from August previous year, said that the apps project had failed, with just about 1 percent of the total users from Windows, Mac, and Linux actually installing and using them on the Chrome browser.

The removal of apps from the Chrome Web Store was actually first announced by Google back in August 2016. Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices, including kiosks. This is the plug-in point for password managers, script and ad blockers, mail checkers, and even the occasional fully fledged app, like Google Hangouts for Chrome. While Google did mention at the time that it might take them up to Q1 2018 to strip out the program completely, the company has shut down the "app" section present previously on the Chrome Web Store. Developers can continue to build Chrome apps (or Android apps) for Chrome OS. Chromebooks are already capable of running some Android apps and apps on the Chrome browser would seem redundant. Google expects that PWAs will be available on desktops come mid-2018. Other features of a PWA website include integrated push notifications and some offline capabilities, according to Ars Technica.

Another great thing about Progressive Web Apps is that it's not exclusive to Google's Chrome web browser because it uses all existing W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards.

Google wants to throw yet another app type into the mix, though. In a message Google recently sent to developers (via Android Police), Google said that it was now working to bring Progressive Web Apps to desktop and that it was targetting a launch date of mid-2018.
