German Police Destroy Package Containing Nails, Powder, Firecracker Found At Christmas Market

In the German Potsdam on Friday afternoon evacuated the visitors and vendors of the Christmas market because of a bomb threat.

Police were notified about the package after it was delivered to a pharmacy on the same street as the market at around 2:30 p.m. "In the area of operation was also a Christmas market". But "according to the first element of the investigation", it appears "unlikely" that the Christmas market was the target, the police said. After initial reports that it was an explosive device, local authorities said the cylindrical canister was filled with nails, powder, batteries and wires - as well as a powerful firework of a type not allowed in Germany - but there was no sign of a detonator.

They said they were continuing the search for the sender of the package, and tweeted that "no ignition device" had been found.

Interior minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter said the powder would be analysed to determine if it was unsafe.

Schroeter told reporters at the scene earlier that nails and a powder were inside the parcel.

Meyritz wasn't immediately available to provide further details, but told the newspaper that the package measured about 40 centimeters by 50 centimeters (16 inches by 20 inches) and was apparently delivered by a messenger service. "That's why we are only at the beginning of our job".

As reported, in December a year ago, a terrorist attack at a Berlin Christmas market killed 12 people.
