France No2 Stephen hints Giroud should leave Arsenal

His plan to battle with French worldwide teammate for starting duties has not gone according to plan for Giroud, though, with the former Montpellier man yet to start a single Premier League game this season.

France assistant manager Guy Stephan has admitted that Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud "must play more" if he wants to make the squad for the 2018 World Cup.

The 31-year-old striker has been an important figure in Didier Deschamps' plans for three years now and has been one of his country's most reliable performers, yet he finds Alexandre Lacazette ahead of him in the pecking order at club level.

But his decision looks to have backfired with just 234 minutes of league action this term, including a late cameo in the pulsating 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

"A loan deal in January? He's been very good in the last couple of months, he's featured a lot and scored important goals, so now he has to play a lot".

Giroud has scored 29 goals in 69 appearances for France since making his worldwide debut in 2011.

He has managed starts in all 5 of Arsenal's Europa League fixtures to this point, but Arsene Wenger has used Europe's second-tier competition as more of an opportunity for youngsters and those struggling for first-team chances to receive game-time.

"We want to be on the pitch, we are all competitors so that is it".
