First Scorpene submarine, Kalvari, to be inducted today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commissioned the first of the six Scorpene-class submarine Kalvari into the Indian Navy

All the six will be inducted by 2020-2021 now.

Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and governor C. Vidyasagar Rao were present at the ceremony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Mumbai today (i.e. Thursday), inaugurated INS Kalvari at Gateway of India.

The new 1,565-tonne submarine, named INS Kalvari+ (tiger shark, a deadly deep-sea predator) after the first-ever submarine inducted by India from Russian Federation in December 1967, is to be followed by five of her Scorpene sisters under the Rs 23,652 crore "Project-75" underway at Mazagon Docks in collaboration with France.

Kalvari has gone through 120 days of extensive sea trials. The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS, are being built by MDL in Mumbai as part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy. "It is the first of six such submarines that will be inducted into the Indian Navy, and represents a significant success for Make In India", the Prime Minister's Office tweeted after the inauguration.

The 1,565-tonne submarine is named after the dreaded tiger shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.

The second one INS Khanderi is slated for delivery by December.

The commissioning of Kalvari coincides with the golden jubilee of the submarine arm of the navy.

The Scorpene submarine is created to operate in all theatres, including the tropics. Her 360 battery cells (each weighing 750 kg) power the extremely silent Permanently Magnetised Propulsion Motor. "The submarine has superior stealth and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision-guided weapons", said another officer. The attacks can be carried out with torpedoes both while submerged or on the surface - in all war theatres including the tropics, giving it an unmatched invulnerability.
