Cubs agree to $38 million, 3-year deal with righty Chatwood

Cubs sign starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood to 3-year deal

Right-hander Tyler Chatwood and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a $38 million, three-year contract.

Chatwood posted an 8-15 mark and a 4.69 ERA in 33 appearances last season for the Colorado Rockies. He struck out 120 batters in 147 2/3 innings and struggled with his control at times, walking 77 batters for a 4.7 walks-per-nine-innings rate. Chatwood has been fantastic on the road in the past two seasons. Pitching half his games at Coors Field, Chatwood actually has performed quite well but does come with some questions about how many innings he can pitch.

Chatwood, a second-round pick by the Angels in 2008, spent seven seasons with the Angels and Rockies, but missed the entire 2015 after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery. With a 3.49 ERA on the road, there is plenty of reason to expect better numbers in a new location.

Chatwood will join Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jose Quintana in the team's rotation.

Chatwood compiled a 40-46 record with two saves and a 4.31 ERA in six major league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and Rockies. Mike Montgomery will once again prepare as a starter in spring training and fill a rotation role as needed.

The 27-year-old Chatwood was one of the youngest and most intriguing free agents on the market.
