Lancaster area Clemson Tiger fans said they feel the Tigers are peaking as they open defense of their national championship in the College Football Playoff.
I don't want to hear the argument that it's logistically impossible, or it would put an extra strain on the teams involved having to play an extra game. In theory, installing the playoff system was going to eliminate any potential snubs, as the best four teams would play it out in order to determine a national champion.
"We look at it right now, we're not good enough".
That one went to Alabama, the team that has played in the playoff each year since its inception in 2014. The Crimson Tide beat out Big Ten champion Ohio State for the final spot despite not winning its SEC division. The Horned Frogs clearly had the stronger resume, but like Baylor, did not win the Big 12 since at the time, it did not have a conference championship game.
OK, not so much with the top three teams (Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia), but the highly debated fourth spot.
Besides, with there being so many teams, plus teams that are usually up for the same playoff spots don't play each other, which makes it even more of a hard job. But four teams isn't enough anymore.
Ohio State was ranked fifth by the CFP, Wisconsin was sixth and Auburn was seventh. Of course, it wouldn't eliminate the bundle of meaningless bowl games, but at least it would add a few more relevant games.
Explaining the reasoning, Hocutt said that in comparing the teams, Alabama was unequivocally "better" than the others. Washington was 11th and unbeaten Central Florida was 12th.
Ohio State's 31-point loss on November 4 at Iowa was ultimately too much for the committee to handle. Auburn had 488 yards of offense in a regular-season rout of Georgia, but was held to just 259 total yards in losing to the Tigers in the SEC Championship last Saturday.
The committee protocol states conference championships are to be considered it the teams are close, like a tiebreaker.
Also, while the SEC has dominated college football for most of the last decade, that's not really the case this year.
Outside of the light-up-the-scoreboard, bombs-away brand of football played in the Big 12, the conference doesn't command a whole lot of respect in terms of line-'em-up, hit-you-in-the-mouth, play-tough-nosed- defense football.
After an action-packed opening round in which road teams won three of the eight matchups, there was even more can't-miss stuff as national seeds finally got to take the field for the playoffs.
"We should just ask them at the beginning of the season: Go ahead and vote on it, figure out 1, 2, 3 and 4 and let's just not (bother)". The Sooners will be looking to make up for their performance in the 2015 playoff, when they fell to Clemson 37-17 in the semifinal, whereas the Bulldogs are looking to make the most of their first playoff appearance.
While Riley didn't think he had ever met Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart face to face - though the two have spoken on the phone several times - Georgia's offensive staff did spend a day in Norman during the spring.
The quarterfinals kick off Friday night as the James Madison-Weber State will take place. Kickoff is at 8:45 p.m.
