Casualties as bomber attacks Somalia police academy

Suicide bomber kills 18 at police academy in Somalia

A suicide bomber struck the main police academy in Somalia capital Mogadishu on Thursday.

The attack happened while police officers were conducting a rehearsal for the Police Day celebration scheduled for December 20, the officer said. According to reports, several people are feared dead in the attack, with few reports claiming it to be around 13.

A bomber wearing a police uniform detonated his explosive vest during a morning parade at the General Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu, a police officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"Medical rescuers are still working on evacuating the casualties", Abdulle said. "Ambulances have been rushing the wounded away and taking the dead bodies".

The Shabaab lost its foothold in Mogadishu in 2011 but has continued its fight, launching regular attacks on military, government and civilian targets in the capital and elsewhere.

The US has carried out at least 32 drone strikes this year against al-Shabab and a small but growing number of fighters linked to the Islamic State group, many of them defectors from al-Shabab.
