Bodycam video shows officer dragged by auto

Police say the officer, Jon Cusack, arrived at the scene of a vehicle which had two people either asleep or unconscious inside.

A Florida police officer is recovering in a local hospital after a 38-year-old man dragged the officer for about a half-mile from the door frame of his vehicle Tuesday morning.

Police said Cabrera then led police on a chase, reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour, and even using heroin while driving, according to the police report, before he was eventually apprehended in busy morning traffic on I-595.

Police say Thomas Cabrera, 38, was the driver and tried to murder an officer in the process.

A Florida police officer was dragged by a speeding auto while responding to a possible overdose and the incident was all caught on the officer's body camera.

Cabrera then fled north on nearby I-75. The responding officer noticed what looked like drugs inside the auto so he put on protective gloves.

Security at Century Village called police saying the two were asleep in the vehicle and there was a clear bag with a substance in it. Security was concerned of an overdose. Seconds later a second person was removed from the vehicle and also taken into custody.

Xiques said the injured officer was taken to Memorial Hospital, where their injuries are reportedly non-life threatning.
