BMW Announces Partnership To Develop Solid-State Batteries

Automotive

Presently, Solid Power is focused on the development and scaling of its batteries, while paying attention to safety, performance and cost.

xEV refers to both battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Established in 2012 and with links to the University of Colorado Boulder, Solid Power has its own facility with prototype assembly, small-scale cell production and material synthesis capabilities.

Solid Power reports BMW will assist the company in achieving performance targets that meet the objectives of high performance electric vehicles.

A partnership now to develop solid state batteries for BMW nearly certainly means Toyota will be well ahead of the curve if it does deliver on its promise in just a few years, but solid state does look like it's going to be a reality very soon.

Due to the battery containing no liquid electrolyte, they are said to be safer and more cost effective than lithium-ion.

BMW might have been a EV pioneer when it launched the i3 and i8 a few years ago, but in 2017 it faces stiff competition from the likes of Tesla - and more traditional brands such as Renault, Mercedes and Nissan. On the occasion, the company stated that since the lunch of BMW i3 in 2013, it has delivered more than 200,000 EVs and by 2025, it aims to offer at least 25 electrified models.

BMW set out to sell 100,000 electric cars this year globally, and it has managed to do that, the company revealed today. Just like the technology powering Dyson's electric vehicle project, the new battery cells use a high capacity lithium metal anode.
