Authorities Probe Why NJ Girl, 8, in Time Out Killed Herself

An 8-year-old girl from New Jersey died by suicide Sunday in her Vailsburg home a week before her birthday. Although they have not yet determined a motive, they do believe she saw a story on Facebook about Ashawnty Davis' death just a few days prior. Sources say McCray had seen reports of the 10-year-old's death on Facebook and may have tried to replicate the suicide.

Now prosecutors are looking into whether McCray was copying what she could have read involving Davis' death or if she hung herself in a tragic case of playacting.

News12 New Jersey reported Tuesday that prosecutors also said they don't know how the New Jersey girl died and that her body had no visible injuries.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the incident "tragic".

The day she died, McCray had reportedly been given a timeout by her parents. However, when she did not return for a long time, her family members went to check on her where they found her in an unconscious state. She had a faint pulse when paramedics arrived on scene, but prosecutors said she was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark.

Ashawnty Davis, a 10-year-old girl from Colorado, captured national headlines back in November when she reportedly took her own life after a video of her being bullied was shared online.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Davis, of Aurora, Colorado, hanged herself in a closet after a video of her confronting a bully was posted to the social media app
