2018 emoji feature proposal released

The excitement is palpable with the Unicode Consortium announcing their latest list of emoji in the Emoji 11 beta list overnight

The list of emoji characters was renamed to Emoji 11 instead of 6 to connect it to further versions of the entire Unicode standard. Going by normal timelines, that means you should see these new emoji in September, October or November of 2018.

Also now published is a proposed update to TR-51, which is Unicode's emoji documentation. Presumably, this would allow users to customize their emoji's direction before sending them.

"Emoji with glyphs that face to the right or left may face either direction, according to vendor preference", reads a new section of the document. "The following ZWJ mechanism can be used to pick an explicit direction".

"Unicode have chosen a way to handle emoji directions but no specific emojis have been called out to support this", he says, adding that this step could happen "any time now". Images: Apple / Emojipedia composite.

However some proposals have already been canned - including a frowning pile of poo, mango and redheads.

Emojipedia users have long requested a way to flip emoji direction, and if this feature goes ahead it is likely to target only the emojis that would benefit from it most.

Above: These previous emoji candidates are not in the current Emoji 11.0 beta. The final list will be confirmed in the first quarter of next year, with a decision in January and an announcement in March.

The Beta list, which is now available for developers to check, contains 130 Draft Candidates which includes a number of new emoji including Cupcake, Superhero (both male and female), Super Villian!, Kangaroo (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie), toilet paper and pirate flag amongst a load of others.
