WUSD hits expectations on state report card

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released district report cards on Tuesday and the West Salem School District once again exceeded expectations.

It shows 82 percent of public and private school report cards had three or more stars, meaning they meet expectations. This affected the report cards by showing less participation.

The scores of 162 schools and 24 districts were flagged for parents, teachers, community members and others who look them up.

That change in the growth calculation caused scores for some schools to fluctuate significantly higher. They include Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kennedy, Van Buren and Roosevelt elementary schools.

And one of the district's charter school, TAGOS Leadership Academy, received a rating of "fails to meet expectations".

On the negative side, both Craig and Parker high schools received ratings of "meets few expectations".

Two more schools, Wilson Elementary School and Edison Middle School, received ratings of "exceeds expectations".

The West Salem School District was rated among the highest in the La Crosse area behind only Onalaksa, Bangor, and Cashton.

The state takes four measurements: student achievement on state tests, growth in student performance, how well schools close achievement gaps between student subgroups, and how well schools prepare kids for life after high school.

This is the second year for the current format of the report card that is issued for all 2,447 schools and 422 districts.

The schools in the Madison Metropolitan area stayed pretty stable. This validates why student growth data is a measure for our annual district scorecard, a tool that monitors accountability and improvements at the school and district level.
