World Antibiotic Awareness Week, 13-19 November 2017

NIH and WHO jointly organised the walk in connection with the world antibiotic awareness week

As part of U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), on behalf of the Interagency Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (CARB) Task Force, has released a Progress Report to detail the significant progress during the first two years of implementation of the National Action Plan for Combatting Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. Correct antibiotic use and good hand washing reduce C. diff infections. Smart Use, Best Care, a nationwide educational initiative to continue to fight antibiotic resistance and protect patients from unnecessary adverse effects.

Antibiotics are essential to treat serious bacterial infections, such as meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis, but they are frequently being used to treat illnesses and viral infections.

The "Keep Antibiotics Working" campaign urges residents in Cumbria to always trust their doctor, nurse or pharmacist's advice as to when they need antibiotics and if they are prescribed, take antibiotics as directed and never save them for later use or share them with others. Minor side effects can include rash, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, and yeast infections.

In its updated guidelines, World Health Organization says that animals that are reared for their meat, milk or eggs should only be treated with antibiotics if they are actually sick, or if there is an infection among their herd, flock or shoal. "CDC encourages healthcare professionals and patients to talk through the best ways to feel better and what treatment options are most effective".

For this week's World Antibiotic Awareness Week (13-19 November 2017), researchers at IDS and Future Health Systems have published new research on Antimicrobial resistance and universal health coverage the global investment needed to build resilient health systems in order to address growing drug resistance long-term. Antibiotics don't work for viral infections such as colds and flu, and most coughs and sore throats. Visit www.cdc.gov/antibiotic-use to learn more about how to participate. High rates of antibiotic use can lead to antibiotic resistance, so it is important for antibiotics to be prescribed and used correctly. Worryingly, four in 10 patients with an E.coli bloodstream infection in England can not be treated with the most commonly used antibiotic in hospitals.

CDC works 24/7 protecting America's health, safety and security.
