UC Browser gets delisted on Google Play Store for 'misleading' promotions

The popular UC Browser, owned by China's Alibaba, has mysteriously gone missing from Google Play Store, and nobody seems to know why.

The browser has landed in trouble for user data privacy concerns earlier in 2015 as well when a Canadian technology research group by the name of Citizen Lab reported that the application was shipping personal data like location, mobile number and other details to third-party applications. The report also ranked the UC Browser as the sixth most-downloaded application on Android platform in India. China-based UC Browser is the leading mobile browser in India with over 100 million base in the country and has a bigger base than Google Chrome. UC Browser has a year ago claimed that it has over 100 million monthly active users in India and Indonesia. At the moment, there is no official word from Google or UC browser.

The browser disappearance was first spotted on Reddit (via Android Authority) and users have an interesting theory regarding it.

There weren't that many browsers when Google released the first version of Android OS. To keep it running as fast and smooth as possible, it's always a good idea to have the latest version ... However, a report in Hindustan Times claims that Google took the step shortly after the UC Browser app came under the Indian government's scanner for allegedly sending data to remote servers in China. Whereas when it comes mobile browsers, UC Browser is the leader with a 45.08 percent market share. The app, which is particularly popular in India, has been delisted from the app store for misleading and unhealthy promotions. However, it did mention that the browser may use the data and information to provide the user with localised services. UCWeb has previously denied any wrongdoing, stating that it "will not do anything to breach the trust of our users" and that it takes "security and privacy very seriously". So, stay tuned to us for more updates.

If one types UC Browser in the Google Play Store, only the UC Browser mini is listed.
