Twitterati who riled up Trump supporters, opponents unmasked

An alt-right Twitter account has been unmasked as a Russian government troll

An investigation by the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee has revealed that the controversial blogger, Abrams, who riled up Trump supporters and opponents in the U.S. was actually the product of a Russian-funded 'troll farm'. Her viral tweets, which went out to almost 70,000 followers, pushed Kremlin-funded opinions that far-right users jumped to defend. After building a following with amusing takes on pop culture and feminism, "she would push divisive views on immigration, segregation and Donald Trump" in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election.

The Twitter logo is displayed on a banner outside the New York Stock Exchange on November 7, 2013, in New York City.

In September 2016, she wrote a now-deleted Medium post arguing for a return to segregation in the US. Her tweets were just controversial enough to pick up attention, but not so out of the ordinary that followers suspected the account could be fake.

Reports noted that one of the most controversial tweets by Abrams claimed that the American Civil War was not about slavery, but instead about money.

The right-leaning account offered pearls of wisdom, like this nugget from April 2016: "To those people, who hate the Confederate flag".

Former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn followed both accounts. Russian propaganda expert and former USA ambassador Michael McFaul routinely got into arguments with her. Ex-White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn retweeted her.

The account was particularly convincing due to the thoroughly crafted online presence. Rather than just being a standalone Twitter account, Abrams also had a personal website, a Gmail account, a Medium account and a GoFundMe page.

Those rebukes only allowed Abrams initial message to spread even wider, which was the ultimate intention of Russia's propaganda campaign - to sow dissension and increase the racial divide among America's voting populace, revealing the world's only superpower as a country in decline.

The revelation that Abrams was in fact not areal shows the extent of some Russian manipulation of elections - as the troll went to significant lengths to appear to be a real person on the platform. Never mind how many activists of any color died to get rid of segregation, and fought for inclusion, black people want it back.

The account has been deleted, along with dozens of other accounts associated with the Russian troll farm.
